Update:
After being effectively banned from Land Speed racing, the decision was made to move the car to Time Attack! This plays into Drew's extensive experience crewing and designing for championship teams.
-------------------
For Drew, the passion began at a young age. By 10 months, his mother had discovered the way to get him to sleep was to strap him into the car seat and drive around the block a few times. By the age of three, all of known baby pictures include a plastic wrench or pliers in his hands as anything less resulted in crying.
At age six, Drew’s face was glued to the window of his father's 1982 Dodge Colt during a long trip as they traversed the Bonneville Salt Flats. "This is where they go to race, Andrew. They build powerful cars and go as fast as they can until they run out of salt." As a child, Drew’s father worked a lot. Seeing him a couple of times per month wasn't out of the ordinary. But twice a year, they went on the Boy Scout's father-son camping trip. Two whole days in the San Gabriel Mountains, but the camping wasn't what Drew looked forward to the most, it was the 3 hour drive.
Of course, nobody really knew what the future held, where that childhood obsession or the evolution of the Mitsubishi engine from that Dodge Colt would take him. But, here he is today on a quest for a land speed record.
Talking about setting a record sounded so simplistic before: slap the car together, make a boatload of power, take it to the salt, set a record, and go home. It's been two and a half years running a race effort, and four and a half building this car. There are moments of glory and moments of bitter frustration, but to Drew, it's all been worth it. There is no experience quite like 200 miles per hour at Bonneville. There's this peace that you simply cannot understand until you have experienced it, and Drew got a taste of it once, just shy of 209 miles per hour on a motorcycle during the summer of 1998.
Drew was first introduced to Douro Oni through James. James’ school was his neighborhood and James’s friends kept seeing his car around. They finally bumped into each other on SupraForums. Drew was invited out to one of our "old school" Tapioca Express late night highway racing meets and became an instantly addition to the group.. His memory of those halcyon days are permeated by eccentric characters and crazy nights up until all hours. We would race until we ran out of gas and money to buy more. There are those who love cars, people who like to read magazines and punch it for a freeway on-ramp. But then there are those who have lived on Ramen for two years spending every dollar to build their car. Douro Oni is that kind of group and Drew felt at home there, because of the love for motor sports, a passion for knowledge, and a respect for cars of all makes and models. After trying a couple of other groups, he was looking for friends who could appreciate a fast car for what it was and didn't have too much ego wrapped up in whatever car they liked the best or whichever sport they felt was superior. A pursuit of purist knowledge and a love of sport is what Douro Oni represents to him so he felt at home here.
Drew has recently developed a suspension upgrade for the MKIV Supra. He has successfully designed the aerodynamics of Modellista's Bonneville wing (which recently recieved praise in international press) and hopes to continue working with them on future projects. Drew’s car is less than one mile per hour away from the F/PS (under 3000cc stock body, forced induction class) land speed record. In mild testing the vehicle has already achieved well in excess of the record, but this must be achieved under race conditions and official recording.
